What is Holistic Therapy?

Holistic Therapy is an integrative approach to psychotherapy and counseling that combines traditional evidence-based therapy modalities with complementary and alternative healing modalities.

Unlike conventional approaches to mental health that focus solely on the mind and just treating symptoms, holistic therapy emphasizes looking at the whole person when treating mental health concerns. This means we look at your mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health on the healing journey.

We are dedicated to helping you heal the root cause of your mental health struggles.

Holistic therapy is the latest wave of psychological thought to emerge in the field and incorporates all the wisdom and modalities of traditional mental health approaches (including CBT, DBT, IFS, Psychodynamic Theory and more), along with alternative healing modalities from ancient wisdom traditions, spiritual practices and western sciences.

This approach transcends the traditional symptom-focused approach to diagnosis and treatment common with most approaches to therapy, and instead focuses on wellness and root cause healing. It acknowledges the interconnectedness of your mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health, offering an integrative and comprehensive approach to true mental wellness.

If you’re frustrated with the traditional western medical model approach to your mental health struggles, our holistic therapists can help. Book a free consultation call to get started.

“Mind and body are not separate systems. What affects one affects the other in sometimes unexpected ways.”
Gabor Maté

Holistic Therapy is an expanded version of traditional talk therapy. It includes the traditional therapy experience of sitting with your therapist and talking, and then weaves in additional modalities that include and honor the mind-body-spirit connection.

Just like traditional therapy, there will be talking and meaning-making, looking back at your childhood, and exploring how your past might still be impacting your present. There will also be mind-body, somatic and spiritual practices that can be used to help you go deeper into your Self, your psyche, your pain and your power, including: meditation, mindfulness, somatic movement, nervous system regulation practices, breathwork, shadow work, inquiry practices, visualizations and energy work.

Holistic therapy honors your unique healing journey and is not a ‘cookie-cutter’ approach to therapy. Meaning, whatever symptoms or mental health diagnosis you present with will be addressed based on what will work for you, not a generic protocol from a book or manual.

When you work with one of our therapists for holistic therapy, we'll support you in exploring themes beyond your symptoms and struggles, and look for meaning and growth opportunities that involve your mental, emotional, physical, spiritual and existential life as well.

Some of the questions we might explore include:

  • How does my childhood impact my current relationships?

  • I know what I'm struggling with, but how do I actually change it?

  • What does it mean to be human?

  • What does my nervous system have to do with my healing journey?

  • Is it possible there is a purpose for my suffering?

  • How can I suffer less?

  • How does what I eat impact my symptoms?

  • Why can’t I control my emotions?

  • How can I experience more joy and love in my life?

Here’s how to get started:

  • If you're looking for support on your healing journey that combines evidence-based therapy with holistic modalities for healing mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually, holistic therapy might be the perfect fit. It’s ideal if you are looking to do deep personal development work and transform your life, not just manage your symptoms.

  • A gentle reminder that healing isn’t linear! Just as everyone's journey is unique, so is the response to holistic therapy. You will most likely notice some subtle changes and improvements in your life and inner world quickly, within a few sessions. This momentum will build and continue to grow over time. The longer you practice and incorporate the tools and insights you gain in therapy, the more you will transform your life. Many of our clients notice their life has changed significantly after a year of doing deep work, both in therapy and in their day to day life. The key to healing and change is showing up for yourself every day with curiosity and compassion.

  • Absolutely! One of the great advantages of holistic therapy is its utility in everyday settings. Your therapist will help you find a daily practice that will work for you to implement between sessions. You will probably find many of the practices you learn in session will become lifelong self-care practices.

  • Holistic therapy is the next wave of psychological thought to emerge and be embraced by the field of Western Psychology. Holistic therapy started gaining popularity in the early 2000’s and integrates the wisdom and knowledge from all the previous schools of psychology, including psychodynamic, behaviorism, humanistic and existential, and transpersonal approaches, along with alternative healing modalities from ancient wisdom traditions, spiritual practices and western sciences.

  • Holistic therapy can be suitable for individuals of all ages, from children to the elderly. However, the type of therapy and approaches used may differ based on your age and your specific needs and requests. Your therapist will work with you, based on your age, temperament and personality to design the most effective treatment plan.

  • Definitely! Anxiety is so much more than a brain chemistry imbalance. Holistic therapy can help you not only find relief from your anxiety symptoms, but also help you unearth the root cause of your anxiety so you can find true healing and not just symptom relief.

  • Absolutely not! This is one of the biggest misconceptions about holistic therapy. A holistic approach to therapy means looking at all the tools available to help you heal, and medication can be a great tool. The difference you’ll see with holistic therapy is that we’ll want to look at how medication can be used as a bridge on your healing journey. That means we don’t recommend medication for every single person we work with, and honor your choice to use or not use medication as part of your treatment. As therapists, we also do not prescribe medication for you to use but will work collaboratively with your primary care doctor or psychiatrist to support you in starting, stopping or maintaining the medication you are on.

  • If you’re ready to be supported with Holistic Therapy, it’s best to work with a licensed therapist or counselor with advanced training in both traditional psychology modalities as well as complementary healing practices. All of our therapists here at The Holistic Counseling Center have a master’s degree in counseling psychology, are licensed to practice psychotherapy and are trained in various holistic modalities.
