Polyvagal Therapy
What is Polyvagal Therapy?
Polyvagal Therapy, also known as Polyvagal-Informed Therapy, stems from the pioneering work of Dr. Stephen Porges, and is a unique method that merges neuroscience and psychology. It helps you learn to track and respond to your nervous system, and attend to your stress response by working with the vagus nerve.
By enhancing different pathways in the nervous system, it can help heal the root cause of imbalances in the mind, body and spirit. This work can help you feel more safe, connected and resourced.
Unlike traditional talk therapy that mainly revolves around verbal interactions, Polyvagal therapy helps get you out of your head and into your body. It can help you learn to regulate your nervous system and offers a holistic approach to healing with its blend of somatic awareness, neuroscience and traditional psychotherapy.
Polyvagal Theory is the science of feeling safe enough to fall in love with life and take the risks of living. - Deb Dana
Polyvagal Therapy works by helping you learn to recognize and tend to your nervous system states. This means you will learn how to recognize the unique ways you experience stress and disconnection in your life and relationships (aka nervous system dysregulation), and then learn how to skillfully navigate and soothe your nervous system with more skill and ease. The result? You’ll be more confident navigating stress and big emotions, and increase your capacity for connection, happiness, joy and love.
What techniques are used in Polyvagal Therapy?
Our Polyvagal-Informed Therapists use techniques such as mindful awareness, deep breathing exercises, and somatic movement to help you learn to regulate your nervous system.
Key practices include:
Mindfulness: Paying attention to your thoughts, feelings, breath, and body can help you tend to your nervous system. Engaging in grounding techniques like deep breathing or meditation can shift your state of being from stress to ease in just a few minutes
Deep Breathing Exercises: Breathing deeply can activate your parasympathetic response, helping you feel more relaxed and calm. This practice can change your thought patterns and increase overall nervous system functioning.
Somatic Movement: Incorporating movement such as yoga, dance, or gentle physical exercise helps release tension and brings more calm into your body. The mind and body are intricately connected, and movement is essential for nervous system regulation.
Havening Techniques: This involves gentle, comforting touch you can useto soothe your nervous system. Based on neuroscience, Havening helps release memories associated with stressful events, shifting the brain towards more peaceful states.
By learning to track and tend to your nervous system states, you gain invaluable tools for your healing journey. Our therapists here at The Holistic Counseling Center can incorporate these practices into your therapy sessions to support you on your healing journey.

Polyvagal Theory is the foundation for Polyvagal-Informed Therapy and illustrates the autonomic nervous system's critical role in our everyday lives, guiding us in recognizing the signs and triggers of different states and offering strategies to shift towards the ventral vagal state. This awareness can be transformative, fostering a greater sense of control and calm in your life.
The theory highlights three primary states of nervous system response:
Ventral Vagal State: Known as the social engagement system, this state represents feelings of safety and connection. When in this state, you feel calm, relaxed, and capable of engaging in meaningful social interactions. It's like experiencing a warm, sunny day where everything feels just right.
Sympathetic State: This state is activated during stress or perceived danger, initiating the fight or flight response. It prepares your body for action, leading to increased heart rate, anxiety, and heightened alertness. It's akin to your body's internal alarm system, readying you to confront or escape a threat.
Dorsal Vagal State: The freeze response occurs in situations of extreme stress or perceived life threat. This state is characterized by feelings of disconnection, numbness, and immobilization, much like pressing the pause button on your emotions when they become overwhelming. It's a protective state, conserving energy and asking for a moment of respite.
Understanding these states and how to navigate them can help you to consciously influence your emotional and physiological responses. This promotes well-being and resilience, helping you move from states of disconnection or hyperarousal to feelings of safety and connection.
