Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy
What Is Internal Family Systems Therapy?
Internal Family Systems Therapy recognizes a profound truth: within each of us exists an inner family of parts, each carrying their own emotions, beliefs, and memories. Like members of any family, these parts each play unique roles in your life—influencing everything from your relationships and self-worth to how you move through the world.
There are no bad parts. Even the parts that might feel challenging or destructive are actually trying to help or protect you in some way.
Through IFS therapy, you'll learn to connect with your different parts with curiosity and compassion, understanding what each one needs to heal. When you learn what your parts need, and learn how to care deeply for yourself, you can finally heal the parts and places within you that have been wounded, abandoned or underdeveloped.

“The goal of IFS is to permanently heal emotional wounds.”
— Frank Anderson
IFS works by helping you identify and understand all your different parts, including their roles, emotions, and underlying motivations. Through techniques such as visualization, somatic awareness, learning how to regulate your nervous system, and guided meditation, you can learn to communicate with your parts and develop a deeper awareness of their internal dynamics. By cultivating empathy and curiosity toward these parts of yourself, you can work towards healing past wounds, resolving conflicts, and achieving a more balanced and integrated sense of self. Ultimately, the goal of IFS is to help you permanently heal emotional wounds.
How Does Internal family Systems Work?
We use IFS at The Holistic Counseling Center because it recognizes and honors the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and spirit. By addressing the internal conflicts and deep childhood programming that contribute to psychological distress, IFS therapy can promote holistic healing and personal growth. Additionally, IFS emphasizes self-compassion and acceptance, aligning with the principles of holistic wellness that prioritize self-awareness, self-care, root cause healing and personal transformation.

Here’s how to get started:
-
IFS differs from traditional therapy by viewing the mind as composed of multiple parts, each with its own perspective and emotions. It focuses on fostering harmony and integration among these parts rather than simply alleviating your symptoms.
-
Because we work from a holistic andbook a free consultation callintegrative approach, we weave IFS into most therapy sessions. When you book a free consultation call, we can discuss how IFS therapy might be beneficial for you and your healing journey.
-
The duration of IFS therapy varies depending on your goals, the complexity of your internal system, and other factors such as how much time you make to practice what you learn in therapy outside of your sessions. You will gain a deeper understanding of yourself after just a few sessions, and since healing isn’t linear, it’s likely that you will benefit from longer-term therapy to get to the root cause of your symptoms and find lasting relief.
-
Yes, IFS therapy can be integrated with other therapeutic modalities, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based approaches, and psychodynamic therapy. Since our approach to therapy is holistic and integrative, your therapist will tailor the treatment plan to best meet your needs.
-
During an IFS therapy session, you can expect to explore your internal parts, emotions, and memories in a warm, compassionate and supportive environment. Your therapist will guide you through exercises and techniques to help you connect with and understand your internal system mentally, emotionally and physically.
-
If you’re ready to explore IFS therapy, make sure to work with a licensed mental health professional with advanced training in internal family systems. All of the therapists here at The Holistic Counseling Center are licensed to practice psychotherapy and have advanced training in IFS therapy.
