Find Your Inner Peace: Using Reiki Healing for Anxiety Relief

Many people find peace and solace in their spiritual practices. Here at the Holistic Counseling Center, we believe that lasting healing and change happens when we combine the best of Eastern wisdom with Western psychology. And one of the ways that we do this is by integrating reiki healing into our psychotherapy sessions.

Let’s face it — anxiety isn’t fun, and it can leave you feeling hopeless and isolated. But we’re here to tell you that anxiety is not a life sentence, and there is hope. Reiki healing is a treatment that focuses on the whole you — mind, body, and spirit. And it can be an effective treatment for helping you find anxiety relief.

What Is Reiki Healing?

Maybe you’ve never heard of reiki, or you’re wondering what it actually is. Here’s a brief overview.

Reiki may sound “new age,” but it’s actually rooted in ancient cultures. The practice originated in Japan in the 20th century. It’s based on the idea that we all have a universal life force energy flowing through us. If this life force energy is low or blocked, then we are more susceptible to getting sick or struggling with our mental health.

Do you sometimes feel like you’re running on empty? When life gets hectic, our bodies don’t always have the energy they need to heal themselves. You may feel anxious and fatigued — and that’s your body sending you an SOS signal that it needs some love and support!

Reiki is a gentle, supportive form of energy healing that is very nurturing to the mind, body and soul. During a reiki session, your therapist transfers healing energy through their hands, and can be provided with or without touch. Since reiki is a non-invasive and comforting practice, it’s a great option for just about anyone. And it can be easily integrated into an overall holistic wellness plan to support your mental health.

Benefits of Reiki Healing

As reiki has become more popular in the modern world, it’s been linked to quite a few emotional and physical health benefits. Here are a few ways reiki may benefit you:

Promotes emotional and spiritual healing

Reiki works to balance the body’s energy centers and remove stuck or stagnant energy from your nervous system. It can reconnect you to your higher self and promotes love, acceptance, and understanding. It can help you develop a greater sense of compassion for yourself and others and access your spiritual gifts.

Supports relaxation and stress relief

Reiki can help to give your body a break from the daily stressors of modern life, which can relieve tension and help you reach a state of deep relaxation.

Provides relief from anxiety, depression, and chronic pain

Reiki may not be able to cure illness on its own, but it can offer profound relief from chronic fatigue, pain, anxiety, and depression. It’s become more popular in hospitals as a complement to Western medicine, as studies have shown that it helps to promote peace and relaxation in patients undergoing surgery. Once you’re in a state of relaxation, your body can begin to heal itself.

Helps to reduce inflammation

Due to its ability to relieve stress, Reiki helps your body return to a state of balance. When your body is in this state of balance and is receiving the life force energy, it can focus on healing inflammation.

What Can You Expect From a Reiki Healing Session?

During your reiki session, you’ll lie down fully clothed and in a comfortable position. Your therapist will begin the session by guiding you through some intentional breathing and a meditation to help you transition into a receptive healing space. Your therapist will place their hands on or near your body and will use gentle techniques to transfer healing energy to your body. Your body is able to take this energy and use it where you need it the most.

So will you feel anything? You might! Everyone is unique, and it depends on how your body responds to the treatment. Many patients report that they feel a sense of warmth and comfort during their reiki sessions. Some feel a tingling sensation, and some even see shapes or colors. And some people don’t feel anything at all. Regardless of what you feel during your reiki session, you’ll still get the benefits. Sometimes unexpected emotions might arise, and that’s totally normal.

After your reiki healing session, you may experience physical effects like having more restful sleep and feeling more relaxed in your body. You might also experience detox symptoms, like headaches. Mentally, you can expect to feel more focused and calm in stressful situations. And on a spiritual level, you might feel more grounded and intuitive.

How Can Energy Healing Promote Anxiety Relief?

Reiki healing aims to restore balance and harmony within your body’s energy systems. When these systems are brought into balance, a more calm and stable internal environment is cultivated, which helps to reduce anxiety symptoms. During a reiki session, your body shifts from fight or flight mode to rest and digest mode. And this is the state in which your body can heal. We often hold tension and anxiety in our muscles, and a reiki session can help to release it.

Plus, when you’re feeling anxious, it’s usually all you can focus on. Reiki helps you to shift that focus elsewhere. It promotes a sense of mindfulness. When you’re able to shift your focus to the present moment and become aware of your thoughts and emotions, you can better understand your anxiety triggers and develop helpful coping strategies.

Like meditation, the effects of reiki healing are cumulative. You’ll get the best long-term results from ongoing sessions.

Integrating Reiki Healing With Other Techniques for Anxiety Relief

Here at the Holistic Counseling Center, we integrate reiki healing into your psychotherapy sessions. We absolutely love the magic that happens when we combine Reiki with traditional talk therapy modalities for a powerful, integrative approach to anxiety relief.

Reiki helps to clear, amplify, and replenish your energetic body, putting you in the perfect space to receive traditional psychotherapy sessions. Our approach is never one-size-fits-all. We’ll tailor our approach to suit your individual needs and goals. Here are some techniques that complement reiki for anxiety relief:

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): CBT helps to reframe negative thought patterns. When we combine it with reiki, we’re able to help you foster a positive mindset and reach a deeper sense of calm and balance.

Mindfulness and meditation: Mindfulness and meditation cultivate present-moment awareness. When combined with reiki healing, you can reach a deeper state of relaxation and enhance the overall benefits.

Somatic Movement: By combining reiki with movement like yoga or somatic release practices, you can find a sense of increased awareness and improved energy flow throughout your body.
